With this issue of Racing World we complete our 6th year of publication, covering the exciting world of Equine sport – horse racing, polo and other equestrian events. Having moved into unchartered territory in August 2003, we are happy to have established ourselves in this niche market providing enthusiasts of the sport with comprehensive information, detailed reviews, timely previews, profile interviews, news and views, breeding and pedigree updates, racing statistics and lots of interesting racing information. Polo has been an intrinsic part of Racing World and we have tried to cover as many events as possible during the polo season. Over the past six years we have had writers from around the globe show interest in writing for Racing World and this has added a new dimension with an international perspective. Promoting all aspects of equine sport is our objective and we hope that those connected with the sport will contribute with ideas that will invoke more interest to those already involved with the sport as well as to attract new entrants to the game. We take this opportunity to thank all our supporters, advertisers, subscribers, contributors and the racing fan in general who have supported us this far. As we commence our 7th year of publication we look forward to your continued support.

CREATES HISTORY
Derby day at Mahalakshmi has begun to create a growing interest amongst the swish set, and with a warm build up to the Blue Riband race of the season, there was a palpable air of excitement that hit you as you sauntered across the lawns. Arriving early to avoid the traffic snarls was a good
idea. Well attired early birds were already thronging the entrance that was alive to the sounds of Robin Parsons and Kaiya.
It is hard to envisage that anyone the world over could ever come close to legendary performers like the iconic Michael
Jackson and the sensational Tina Turner,
SULTAN SINGH – SOHNA STUD FARM‘ SOUNDNESS IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS’
“Talita Kumi was a typical budget purchase made by Sultan Singh at the Goffs Breeding Sales. A tough strong looking mare Talita Kumi had a very useful record as a race mare in Germany, where the quality of racing is good. Having won three races, Talita Kumi exhibited her durability which is...
but this was an entertaining attempt that got the crowd toe-tapping anyway. Last year the air-conditioned tent was a well conceived idea that kept race-goers sheltered from the hot April sun, and this year the 16000 sq ft enclosure worked with equal wonder.
Many a casual race goer who makes Derby-Day a must on their list were more interested in the happenings inside...

BECKET gallops away with the
Poonawalla Bangalore Derby (Gr1)
-Sanjay Reddy
The handsome dark bay colt Becket (Hawk Wing-Boiling River) proved to be a cut above the rest when he turned the Poonawalla Bangalore Derby (Gr1) into a one horse race and in the process justified the hype that had surrounded him from the start of his career.
A smashing final piece of work leading up to the Derby ensured that this Padmanabhan trainee was the focal point of the betting ring and his rivals were being
quoted at seven to one and over, among them the highly rated Cabriolet – a final entry from Mumbai, dual classic winner Fleet Indian, One Thousand Guineas winner Youre So Beautiful and the classic placed Corbett. None of them cut ice with the betting public who were solidly behind Becket despite the fact that he had never run beyond 1600m in his short career of just four racecourse appearances...
‘HALL’ Corners Glory In The Calcutta Million (Gr2)
-Capricorn
When Burning Desire beat Romantic Dancer in the inaugural running of the Calcutta Million in the year 1990 it took over the mantle of becoming an important pointer to the Calcutta Classics events. Just seven runners had accepted in this year’s edition, of which four belonged to trainer Vijay Singh and the rest to his brother Bharath Singh. This year’s running of the Calcutta Million had all the portents of a gift-wrapped race for the Deepak Khaitan-owned Hall Of Glory,
a full brother to Originality, who won in a time of 1:40.19secs.
The Vijay Singh-saddled chestnut colt out of Placerville-Hall Of Honour was well suited to the terms of the race and at the same time had beaten a similar set in the Indian Champagne Stakes and also in the Kunigal Stud Indian Produce Stakes. It came as no surprise when Hall Of Glory opened at 10-7 on in...
Succeeding Star Shocks The Queen Elizabeth II Cup (Gr3) Field.
-Capricorn
Saturday, February 13 was a lucky day for the connections of Succeeding Star because he lifted the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, (Gr3) in taking style. This Darius Byramji-tutored son of Mr Mellon-Star Successor, owned by Mr Suresh kumar, came like a bolt from the blue when he passed the wire to the utter silence of the huge crowd clocking a time of 2:59.65 secs for the 2800 metres race.
The nine horse field held a lot of promise with the presence of several good
runners in the fray for this gruelling distance race. The five-year-old bay horse was ridden to perfection by Nirmal Jodha. If one compares Succeeding Star’s run in the Indian Champion Cup and the Nanoli Stud Calcutta Gold Cup, none would have given him a ghost of a chance to win this Queen’s Cup. In the pre-race parade Raghuvansh looked head and shoulders above his challengers and had the tag of the first favourite. They say in racing, that memory is very...
Ikaria Sprints Away With The Calcutta Champions’
Sprint Trophy(Gr3)
-Capricorn
Fourteen speed merchants were in the fray for the Calcutta Champions’ Sprint Trophy (Gr3). Piato in the care of trainer Vinayak was the rage of the punters and went to the starting gates as the first favourite. The five-year-old went into this race with the benefit of a mock race and was never in the hunt during the race and finished in the ruck. It was the ‘doosra” from the same stable in the form of Ikaria who
gave sprinting lessons to his 13 rivals and won from Ming in a smart time of 1:12.36secs.
The five-year-old gelding out of Juniper-Symphony is owned by Mr & Mrs Khusroo Dhunjibhoy and Mr & Mrs Z K Dhunjibhoy and was piloted brilliantly by C Ruzaan. Having come fresh from his victory in the Army Cup the sprint race...
The Rakesh Kumar Wadhawan-owned Star Empire was the favourite for this prestigious races run over 1400m but it was the Sunderji-trained Ocean And Beyond (Kingsalsa – Sayuri) who turned up trumps winning in 1:24.71
Superior Quest led the field from Ciel Indienne with Ordained One in close attendance in third followed by Tender Romance, Star Empire, Ocean And Beyond and Macchupicchu. When heads were turned for home Ciel Indienne charged ahead in the middle hotly chased by...
A strong field of 16 maidens faced the starter for this multi-million with Light My Way garnering most support.
The Faisal Abbas-trained Keringdingan (Diffident – Victory And Gold) who had run an impressive third in her last outing to Star Warrior had obviously improved on that run to win this six furlong race and pick up a cool two million rupees.
As they were flagged off the anxious three-year-olds jostled for position with Supreme Force, Star of Deccan and Keringdingan, a full sister to the Class 1 reputed five furlong sprinter Monoply, hitting the front with the rest in tow. Star of Deccan led the field into the straight with
Forest Flair (Placerville – Tide Of Fortune) was the best handicapped horse in this 1200m sprint race which is looked upon as the lead up to the Sprinters’ Cup in March. Most of the runners in the field had run together in the Western India Race Horse Owner’s Association Million over 1200m when the Dr M A M Ramswamy-owned Forest Flair had given as much as 11kgs to Portrush, 9kgs to D’artagnan, Spirituall and Pepe Junior and today he was facing them again, this time round receiving 2½ kgs from them and running level weights with D’artagnan and Sea Ruler. If there was ever a handicap certainty of the season it was him. But the so called pundits said he was under a cloud. He ran as favourite at an attractive price of about 12/10. The pundits were...
THE BYARAMJEE JEEJEEBHOY
ECLIPSE STAKES OF INDIA (Gr2)
The Padmanabhan-trained filly Icebreaker (Alnasr Alwasheek-Iceberg), running in the Poonawalla silks for the first time in Western India was all the rage in the Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Eclipse Stakes of India (Gr2). David Allan wrote a copy book race on the chestnut mare, sitting a handy third, four lengths of the pacemakers. Turning for home she took it over so comfortably that even though David Allan hadn’t even pressed the button on her she just sailed away to win the coveted trophy in a...
