those days. His Highness requested Trevor to stay for a few weeks and ride for him, which he did and it culminated spectacularly with Christmas Parade’s win in Riyadh. The rest is history; a professional and personal relationship was forged which would last till his His Highness’s untimely passing in 1999. Trevor is still the yearling handler at Safra Stud. He took up this position after several years as a very successful trainer handling the local champions Lisianthus, Lighting Disc, Rifa’a (original name Damascus Rogue), Rakan (Bold Marauder) and Safra (Miss Lil Z). The last three were all imported from the USA and brought to Bahrain by Frank Mendez. A Puerto Rican by birth Frank Mendez, a traveling lad at the time, eventually settled in Bahrain as assistant trainer to Trevor. He struck out on his own in the early nineties and was a successful trainer for H. H. Sh. Mohammed Bin Isa Al Khalifa and is now a manager at Safra Stud. Englishman Dr. Richard Silvey played a large part in the establishment of Safra Stud and its development as a modern horse breeding facility. Till his retirement in 2001 as Director and Veterinarian, Dr. Silvey oversaw the stud’s complete transformation. The ‘Anglos’ were culled in 1992 so that the stud could step up its standard. This process had begun in 1985 with the import of Jazz Ballet (Jazziero ex Quiet Harbour by Mill Reef) a magnificent, nearly black stallion and twelve broodmares in 1986. Jazz Ballet produced over a hundred winners including the blindingly fast Jazz Fair and Flaming Torch, one of the few horses to upset the great Anchorman in a thrillingly contested Crown Prince Cup. Dr. Silvey, and his then assistant Raja Pillay, realizing the rapid rise in the standard of the sport in Bahrain, and advised His Highness to up the ante and accordingly they imported four expensive broodmares with excellent racing and breeding credentials. They included Fleet Fairy a regally bred daughter of Derby victor Teenoso out of Guineas heroine Fairy Footsteps. Both parents were guided to their greatest triumphs by the legendary Lester Piggott who also rode the aforementioned Wasmiyah to one of her wins in the UK; and Burning Issue in foal to 1980. He assisted both Dr. Silvey’s predecessors Slip Anchor. The resulting foal the best locally bred horse to race in Bahrain.

He won three editions each of The Crown Prince Cup and The Amirs Cup. He would have easily added a fourth win in both races had racing not ceased temporarily in mourning for the passing of his proud owner H. H. Sh. Isa. He never saw the racecourse again as he was retired to the stud that had produced him, in respect of his owner’s memory. Anchorman won eighteen times from twenty-one starts and is sire of the unbeaten winner of the 2008 Kings Cup, Addwaitya. Enharmonic, a strongly made, striking, chestnut son of Diesis and a group winner in England was added to the stallion roster in 1993. He quickly got off the mark with some excellent winners notably Shadow Boxer, Cabin Boy, Cynamon, Nelson, Calypso and Brumby. During his racing days Enharmonic was owned by Her Majesty the Queen who herself was a visitor to the races at the old racetrack and Safra Stud during her state visit in 1979. A major part of Safra Stud imports have been bought with an eye on the breeding shed and it’s been a bonus when they’ve excelled on the racetrack too. A case in point is Medfee, a beautifully put together daughter of Alzao, who, in her three seasons of racing in Bahrain, racked up an impressive record including nine wins in a row in her championship year 1997-98. Most of these were in the highest class and her rivalry with the future Safra Stud stallion Dancing Zena was not for the faint hearted. In its early days the Safra Studbreds raced in the name of H. H. Sh. Mohammed Bin Isa Al Khalifa who now oversees the whole thoroughbred operation for his brother H. M. the King Sh. Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa. H. H. Sh. Mohammed is one of the most ardent patrons and supporters of horseracing in the kingdom. Nowadays Safra Stud is ably managed by Raja Pillay who came to Bahrain from India in Dr. Patricia Ellis, a name well known to anybody in the world of horses, and later Sheikha Danah al Khalifa

who managed both the Safra Stables and the Amiri Arabian Stud till 1985. Raja quickly picked up the ropes of stud management and was soon entrusted with the task of arranging the covering plans every year. Management procedures also improved as Raja became more and more involved with every aspect of the running of the stud. The use of ultrasound has been a great boon with problem mares and has reduced the number of times a stallion needs to cover a mare. In most instances a Safra mare will conceive in a single covering. A methodical and carefully watched teasing schedule is also greatly responsible for this. Feeding, which is one of the most important aspects of horse management is also closely monitored. Foal management at Safra has always been paramount and one has to just see the well-rounded development of the youngsters and the subsequently spectacular results on the racetrack to appreciate this. Cases in point are Sarajevo and Cabin Boy, both orphaned in tragic circumstances just days apart, both went on to become top class racehorses with not a hint of retarded development or growth. This is truly the hallmark of a top class stud. Raja presides over an establishment well on its way into a new era. Senior stallion Assyrian a son of Storm Cat is sire of the Crown Prince Cup winner Burning Ambition and the aforementioned Bobs Yer Uncle. Hopes are high for Dancing Zena (Dancing Brave ex Princess Zena) a champion racehorse in Bahrain and no pushover in the UK and UAE either. Cairdeas a Darshaan half brother to Irish Derby winner Desert King has his first foals on the ground this year and much is expected from this well performed young stallion. Anchorman, Blue Snake (Gone West - Dabaweyaa) a more than useful former Godolphin campaigner and Yiflan another sturdy son of Gone West complete the stallion roster. High quality mares in foal to such big names such as Daylami, Danehill, Singspiel, Entrepreneur and Vettori are acquired with the single aim to make a the Safra Stud a lean, mean, international racing machine. H. H. Sh. Isa would have approved.
